Part II: Finding Your Home in Google Earth - Due Friday (1/21/11)
Google Earth is a great tool for learning geology and we'll be using it extensively in Homework #10 and throughout class this semester. For now, I simply want you to get familiar with the basic processes of navigating and creating placemarks in Google Earth. Begin by downloading Google Earth onto your computer, if you have not done so already. Once you've downloaded Google Earth take some time to get familiar with its navigational tools - you can find a full user guide here.
Once you're familiar with navigation in Google Earth, your task will be to find your home (or, at least, your hometown). In class we'll demonstrate how to create a placemark. For the second part of Homework #1 it is your assignment to create a placemark of your home (or hometown). The title of this placemark will simply be your name and in the description box you should tell your classmates a bit about yourself (maybe your major or interests) and what you know about the geology of the place you've marked. Once you've created your placemark, save it and send it to me (rschott@fhsu.edu). I will compile and publish for the entire class a compilation of all of your individual placemarks. Here's an example of the sort of placemark I'm looking for: http://ron.outcrop.org/kml/Hwk1_Ron_Schott.kmz (Yours doesn't have to be as fancy as that, but I wanted to give you an example that included an embedded photo and links so that you can use the Properties option to view how I did that, in case you want to do that yourself.)
