Homework #3: Interpreting Relative Ages from Geologic Cross Sections

Instructions: Answers the following questions based on the diagram below. We will discuss this cross section on Monday (2/1/10) in class.

If you missed getting the handout in Friday's class (or you just want another copy) please print out this PDF version.

  1. What is the oldest formation on the Minor Canyon block diagram? Explain your reasoning.
  2. What is the youngest rock unit on the diagram? What is the youngest geologic event on the diagram? Are they the same? Explain.
  3. What type of unconformity is found at the base of the Larsonton Formation? What event occurred immediately after the deposition of the Larsonton Formation?
  4. What are the relative age relations between the granite and the Tarburg Formation? Explain your reasoning.
  5. Describe the geologic events that occurred between the deposition of the Lutgrad Formation and the deposition of the Larsonton Formation.
